He's managed to turn the Lannisters against the Boltons, just as Stannis descends upon them. One wonders if Littlefinger actually knew all along what would happen to her, the daughter of his beloved Catelyn. If I were her brother, Jon Snow, I'd have a hard time sticking to my vows after this. Who just barely escaped Joffrey, only to fall into Ramsay's clutches. It's hard to see this done to Sansa, who has already survived so much tragedy and trauma and cruelty. Not to objectify or use women, or use things like rape to titillate. Whatever water this argument may hold, I think the intent is to show just how brutal Westeros-a gritty, bloody Medieval world-was to women, to poor, to the disenfranchised. I've seen some people tweeting and commenting online already about how HBO uses sexual violence this way, and I've read the argument in the past that Martin's work is too "rapey."
HBO hasn't really shrunk from any of the sexual violence in the books.īut I would also argue that this is not being done to exploit or titillate. Joffrey and the unfortunate prostitutes Tyrion sent him. There was the controversial scene between Jaime and Cersei last season. This is also hardly the first time that the show has introduced sexual violence and rape. Anyone too bored by the show won't be after tonight's episode (though lots of people will pretend to quit watching, no doubt, as we've seen so many times before.) In any case, I did warn everyone earlier today that Season 5 had plenty of big surprises left.
A lot of non-readers will be very repulsed, and certainly are already. It was very hard to read about Jeyne and Theon's suffering. The Theon chapters were the only chapters I really couldn't stomach in all of Martin's books. I dread it still, given what Ramsay does to Jeyne Poole. In this universe, I was dreading what would happen to Sansa. I can truly accept that the HBO Game of Thrones program is not the same story as George R.R. These alternate universes of fiction are playing out before us in a truly unique way, and it's actually making the changes more palatable.
